Flood
Relief
Tuesday, 26th
July, 2005. The first warning of the
devastation that was to follow, came at about 4.00
p.m. p.m. a decision was
taken to send the girls, teachers and other staff home. Located in Bharat
Nagar, behind the Government Servant’s Colony, off the Bandra Kurla
Complex in Bandra East in North Mumbai. Shaheen Urdu High School is a
recognized school for girls with over 450 girls in standards 8th,
9th and 10th. (The undersigned is Treasurer
and co-founder of the school established in June 1992). Shaheen Urdu
High School is also the distribution point and working centre of Rahat Welfare
Trust, a known and registered NGO and Trust, which helps thousands of
students either partially, or totally through its Total Educational
Support Scheme (TESS), under which a student once selected receives
almost every thing to go to school on a continuing basis. Majority of the
students so sponsored are orphans (having lost their fathers) and also
children of divorcees and deserted women. Rahat has over 2500
applications on record from hundreds of widows, divorcees, destitute and
deserted women, all of whom want to educate their children. (For details of Rahat’s

Fifteen days after
the deluge on 8th August 2005 the situation in Bharat Nagar
and other affected areas is still very bleak. On that fateful Tuesday
afternoon, in a matter of hours, the Mithi River overflowed its banks and
inundated nearly all of the 5000-6000 ground floor houses-huts of
this slum locality. Everyone lost almost everything: clothes, mattresses,
books, cupboards and furniture, household items. There was no way to save
anything, such was the ferocity of the garbage-filled, slime-infested,
filthy water.
In this time of
great distress when over 1000 people have lost their lives and lakhs have
suffered great losses and are distressed and traumatized, Rahat
Welfare Trust would like to add its modest efforts to help ease a little bit
of suffering. And it would start with the Rahat beneficiaries from
all over the City, for students of Shaheen Urdu High School and for the
residents of Bharat Nagar from where we work. And also all other
people affected by the floods in any way we can. Funds are urgently needed
for food-grains, medicines, school
books, uniforms, clothes and other household items.
