Light Up The Sky

Rahat in Perspective: Rahat Welfare Trust was established in 1992 with the primary objective of promoting the welfare of Muslim women and children, particularly that of widows and orphans. While Rahat started working in 1992, some of us associated with Rahat have a grassroots level community-service background of almost thirty years. Due to this exposure we discovered that there was no organsiation in Mumbai that offered timely help to women on a timely basis. Particularly to widows, divorcees and deserted women and their children. From this perspective Rahat is a need based organsiation and in September 2007 has over 3000 applications from such bereaved and deserving families.

Welfare literally means well-being. And well-being is defined as a state of good health, happiness and prosperity. We feel that the well being of a poor community can be achieved ONLY by educating the children of the community. Untrained and uneducated these widows and divorcees, when they come to Rahat for help, when they sob and cry and plead, almost universally they all want to educate their children. Rahat is helping them do just that. Left on their own to struggle to earn a livelihood, and bring up and educate their children. The world can be a cruel place for such women. We cannot really express the tragedy, the misery and the anguish that we face when we encounter these women. Their only hope for a better life is through the education of their children.

Total Support: Rahat is now helping 250 such families on a continuing basis, under its Total Educational Support Scheme (TESS), sponsoring about 350 children. Essentially TESS is a sponsoring scheme under which a student once selected is provided with almost everything required by a child to go to school. Bus, computer and school fees, text-books, note-books, work-books, uniforms, stationery, raincoats, shoes, socks, ties, badges, extra-curricular activities expenses - everything is provided by Rahat. Rahat provides total support to the family to ensure that the child goes to school properly. Educating the sponsored children is now Rahat’s responsibility

Rahat also gives a small monthly allowance for food and ration to several families. Rahat provides nearly four hundred uniforms to poor students, going mainly to Municipal schools at the beginning of every academic year. And now after fifteen years of work at the grassroots, in the slums and the chawls, scores of Rahat scholars have become self-reliant, earning a decent livelihood, supporting their families and volunteering to help others. These are the role models who have shown that a better world is possible. These are the shining stars who have enriched our efforts and have given a meaning to our work. Tempered with Islamic values and characters, we hope, that these shining stars will not only light up their own world but the sky itself.

We cannot really express the tragedy, the misery and the anguish that we face when we deal with these hapless women.

ZAKAT COLLECTION. Rahat activities are funded mainly through the Zakat collection in Ramzan every year. And Rahat does need funds on a consistent and larger level if it is to convert into a movement. We therefore request you to send Rahat a part of your Zakat this Ramzan. (Donations are also welcome). No amount is too small not to be of help. Please ask at least two other persons to do the same. Zakat/Donations may be sent by a payee’s account cheque/draft in favor of Rahat Welfare Trust to our Administrative Office address at: Row House 5 A, Asmita Hillview CHS, Srikanth Dhadway Road, Mira Road 401107. Donors in Mumbai may contact us on phone 26552256 or on mobile 9892309785, we will collect Zakat from their home, office or shop. Donations of Zakat to Rahat are eligible for deductions as per rules under Section 80 G of the Income Tax Act, 1961. Thank You. May God Bless you.
