A Monument to the
|Milli Model School in Okhla, New Delhi was founded abruptly in 1988 in makeshift classrooms when hundreds of Muslim pupils were suddenly withdrawn by their parents after the insistence of a local charitable school on following mushrik rituals and forcing Muslim children to participate in puja. Today the MMC has its own building, a staff of 30 including 25 teachers and 500 students – all funded by the community. Due to shortage of space, the MMC runs in two shifts, one for boys, the other for girls. The MMC caters mostly for the poor Muslim children of the area who would otherwise end up as child labour. Most pupils receive free or subsidized education. The man behind this successful experiment in self-help is Er Zainul Abidin Mansoori, the school’s honorary administrator.
