Okhla councillor attacked
By Tanveer Saiyed
|Okhla area councillor Asif Muhammad Khan was brutally assaulted by unidentified goons in the morning of 14 September. He miraculously survived serious injuries and multiple fractures as area residents rushed him to hospital. Now out of danger, Khan has told the police that he ‘did not rule out the involvement of the local MLA and Delhi Transport Minister Pervez Hashmi for masterminding the attack. He has pointed the needle of suspicion to Hashmi’s PA Waseem Ahmad who is absconding since the attack.
Initially, Mr Khan was treated in the intensive care unit of the Holy Family Hospital for five days. On September 19 he was moved to the Apollo hospital.
On the other hand, when this correspondent approached Hashmi at his Okhla residence to know his reaction, he declined to comment on the matter except that he (Asif Khan) is injured in an attack, so he is blaming us and that it is his right to blame someone. When referred to media reports about their political rivalry in the area, he lost temper and told this correspondent: ‘Write the whatever has appeared, I do not have time for this.’
When this correspondent approached Mr Khan in Apollo Hospital on 20 September, his clothes were being changed by hospital attendants. When asked about the assailants, Mr Khan said I suspect both Hashmi and Waseem. He added that he has filed an FIR against the duo. He tried to substantiate his allegation by saying that if they are not involved in the attack, why Wasim is absconding?. Waseem’s sudden disappearance strengthens my doubts, Mr Khan added. But sources claimed that Waseem has been arrested.
When asked why no culprit has been arrested so far, Mr Khan said the police is looking into the matter. I have asked the SHOs of Sarita Vihar and New Friends Colony’s police stations to bring the culprits to the book, he added.
Recalling the ordeal, Mr Khan said a Maruti car overtook my scooter and hit me, while another car hit me from behind. The attack was pre-planned. There were around 20 hired assailants who used iron rods and wooden sticks to hit me, he added. According to Mr Khan, the attackers left him dead on their count, but he survived by luck. Mrs Khan said her husband’s both hands are badly fractured.
