UP bill condemned

Muslim organizations all over the country have condemned the UP government’s bill to curtail minorities’ right to build places of worship and education. An action committee has been formed in Kanpur to strive for the annulment of the move which has been termed as ‘the black bill.’ Sit-ins have been organized at various places. Christian organizations, too, have protested against this unconstitutional move. Secular parties like the Congress and Samajwadi and Bahujan Samaj have condemned the move. A meeting of various Muslim organisations including the All-India Muslim Majlis-e Mushawarat, Jama’at-e Islami Hind, Jamiat-e Ulama-e Hind, Movement for the Empowernebt of Muslim Indians, All-India Shia Conference, Insaf Morcha etc issued the following statement on 21 January:
‘the provisions of the Bill in effect prohibiting all religious communities from not only constructing new places of worship, but modifying, reconstructing or extending any existing places of worship, is a direct attack on the freedom of religious worship guaranteed by the Constitution of India. All minority communities in general and the Muslim community, in particular, are gravely perturbed at his development. They, therefore, strongly condemn the Bill as passed by the UP Legislature and request the Governor of UP not to give his assent to the proposed draconian law which contravenes the Constitution of India and also request the Government of India and all secular parties to intervene in the matter without loss of time.’
