Meghalaya Muslims surveyed
Reports from various parts of the country speak of a clandestine operation to ‘survey’ Muslims including their institutions, mosques, madarsas etc. There can be no objection if there is a general survey of all citizens but when a certain community is targeted, it is time to sit up and take stock of the situation. Earlier reports spoke of such operations in Gujarat and U.P. The VHP is also reported to be involved in such an activities. The following report from Meghalaya suggests that such operations are taking place in other parts as well. The police order (see facsimile) suggests that it is widespread and with certain high level authority.
Muslims living in Garo Hills districts of Meghalaya were surveyed by the state police in February this year.
Information relating to Muslim population, their religious and educational institutions along with names of imam, maulvi and haji of the respective police station areas were collected. This has created a feeling of insecurity and fear among the Muslims of the state. No such information regarding the Hindu or Christian communities was collected.
According to the 1991 census, the Muslim population of Meghalaya is 41,434 which makes 2.34 percent of the total population of the state.
