| | Wives’ adopting their husbands names is wrong
Is it correct for married women to use the surnames of their husbands as is common in some countries?
Dr Yusuf Al-Qaradawi replies:
A woman’s ascribing herself to her husband instead of her father is a kind of wrong claim. Allah says in the Qur’an: ‘Call them by after their fathers: that is juster in the sight of Allah’ (33:4).
A wife should be called as ....daughter of ....ascribing herself to her father. To ascribe herself to her husband, as is common among aliens, is wrong and unlawful in the eyes of the Shari’ah.
Is it correct to conduct funeral prayers for a person who dies due to consuming narcotics. Is he considered as an unbeliever and one who commits suicide?
Dr Yusuf Al-Qaradawi replies:
It is lawful to perform the funeral prayer of a Muslim who commits suicide because he is not an unbeliever. He is a sinner only as he defies a Divine rule enjoining people should not kill themselves (Qur’an, 4: 29). But the ruler or the head of the religious establishment should not lead his funeral prayer. Rather an ordinary Muslim should do so and the people should beg Allah for his forgiveness. It it is possible that Allah will forgive this person because Allah may forgive all sins except shirk (4:116).
