Anjuman Platinum Jubilee Celebrations Lectures on Education held
By Aftab Kola, Bhatkal

No investment is greater than investment in education; no wealth is greater than knowledge; and no poverty is greater than ignorance. The aim of education is not so much knowledge but the ability to face challenges of life. Sowing the seeds of knowledge which should fructify on the horizon of human fellowship is the real aim of education.’ These were the observations of Prof. B. Sheikh Ali, former vice-chancellor of Mangalore and Goa universities. He added that ‘It is a tragedy that the faith (Islam) that began with ‘Iqra’ that taught with pen and that made knowledge unfold innate divinity in man, is characterized today as the most ignorant on the face of earth’. He was speaking on ‘current situation of Muslim education with particular reference to Muslim concentration districts’ as part of Memorial Lectures in connection with the platinum Jubilee of Anjuman Hami-e-Muslimeen, Bhatkal at Bhatkal recently. Lamenting on the status of education among Muslims Prof. Sheikh Ali called upon the wealthy and the influential sections in Muslim community to come forward in order to promote literacy among Muslims. He added unless the poor are motivated to take up education the Muslims will remain backward forever. Another speaker Prof. K A Jaleel, speaking on ‘economic and social causes for high drop-out rates-remedial steps’, observed education can alone produce good human beings. Enumerating different causes for the drop-outs, Jaleel said proper supervision by the parents and provision of quality education can check drop-out rates. Mr. Ismail Hasan Damudi, vice-chairman, Anjuman education trust, presiding over the function said efforts from all quarters need to be made to provide education to Muslim children.

Earlier, Mr. Muallim Zafar, general secretary, Anjuman, welcomed . Mr. Syed Hasan Sakkaf profiled the Anjuman. Mr. Syed Zubair thanked the audience.
