Rao completed Babri demolition
RSS and its allied organizations have a fixation with history, especially in
peddling tales of fake victimization by ‘Muslim’ rulers. For long, they have
peddled fanciful theories about the origins of the 400-year old Babri Masjid in
Ayodhya. Now, it is the very recent history of the mosque’s demolition by
their rampaging mobs is being rewritten or, who knows, part of the grand
conspiracy is exposed. It is not long ago that one of the BJP stalwarts, Mr
Malkani, claimed that the ISI demolished the structure..
Though the brutal image of frenzied young men standing atop the mosque on 6
December 1992 has been etched in the minds of television viewers across the
world, the BJP mouthpiece, BJP Today, now claims that the actual demolition was
carried out by the agents of the Narasimha Rao government, then in power at the
Centre. Some Congress leaders, like Arjun Singh, have also blamed Rao for his
role in the conspiracy which in any case was originally hatched and executed by
the Sangh Parivar and Shiv Sena people who boasted of the fact at the time in
their statements as well as in their publications like Panch Janya and Samna.
Both published a roll of honour of those who took part in the demolition..
The cover story in the current issue of the periodical carries pictures of the
mosque and an ‘eyewitness account’ claiming that while the rampaging kar
sevaks had only razed the three domes, the demolition of the remaining structure
was done after the Kalyan Singh government was dismissed and Utter Pradesh had
come under President’s rule at 4.45 p.m that day.
BJP Today editor Praful Goradia, as well as the anonymous writer of the
first-person account, claim that not only were the walls of the mosque
pulverized and the rubble removed, but the makeshift temple of Ram Lalla too was
built during the next 60 hours after President’s rule was imposed.
In support of this theory, the publication reproduces a letter to Goradia from
Syed Shahabuddin, former MP and Babri Masjid Action Committee leader, in which
the latter writes:
‘In fact, I have always, verbally and in writing, held Prime Minister
Narasimha Rao as much, if not more responsible, for the demolition of the Masjid
and any basic evidence has always been that the demolition was completed, the
debris were leveled and the Ram idols were reinstalled (though some people
question their originality) and the make-shift temple was created after UP had
been placed under President’s rule.’ q
(Goradia had said this earlier, without recourse to a third
party, in a letter to the Indian Express, 10 Dec. 1999).
