A Nation in Exile:
Afghan Refugees: 1983-2001
Text and photographs: Judith Mann
These photographs of Afghan refugees were taken in the Katchagiri Refugee Camp, Peshawar, Pakistan in 1983. Eighteen years later, the two million Afghans left in dusty, sprawling camps in Pakistan after the Soviet war, are joined by new refugees fleeing their beleaguered country which is fighting for its soul and survival amid the vicious ‘Great Game’ played at its expense - a game in which it has no stake...
What struck me the most when photographing these star-crossed people, was their open and vibrant spirit, made even more exceptional by their strained living conditions and traumatic experiences.
