Limits of western freedom
Station manager fired for covering Palestine rally!
By Nadia Keilani
|One of the most sacred things to a free society is the freedom to express varied points of view without fear of repercussion. In this country, the belief is that there is no better way for doing that than through publicly funded broadcasting. Therefore, you can imagine my dismay when I learned that Pacifica Radio Network, at CPB's urging, fired WBAI's station manager Valeri Van Isler. It is my understanding that she was fired not due to any deficiency in her performance, but simply for broadcasting two controversial pieces. One of the reasons Ms. Van Isler was fired is because she chose to cover the Palestinian Right of Return Rally. How amazing that she can be penalized for covering an issue which is recognized by international law as a just one! Imagine, she was penalized for covering an issue which even the United Nations (Resolution 194) supports. This resolution is further clarified by UN General Assembly Resolution 3236 which reaffirms in Subsection 2, ‘the inalienable right of the Palestinians to return to their homes and property from which they have been displaced and uprooted, and calls for their return’. In addition, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights article 13 reaffirms the right of every individual to leave and return to his country. By firing Ms. Van Isler, you not only suppressed free speech, you also stood against justice and human rights. Perhaps CPB should now stand for ‘Coalition for Proliferating Bigotry.’
