AMU NEWS

Inaugurating a three day workshop on “Information retrieval through Internet for the study of protein structure and other applications”, on 14 January AMU Vice chancellor, Mr M.Hamid Ansari emphasised the need for good quality research in respective fields. He felt that there should be no boundaries or limitation for the scientist to carry out research.
Mr Ansari recognized the problems faced by scientific community in general and those in the universities and hoped that the situation would improve once the interaction between researchers and industry increases.
Delivering the key-note address, Professor T.P. Singh, head, department of biophysics at the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences has described in detail researches going on in his laboratory in the development of anti-inflammatory and arthritis drugs. He also commented on the research potential of the interdisciplinary bio-technology unit at AMU and pleaded for its whole-hearted support and encouragement.
In his welcome address, Prof M. Saleemuddin, workshop director, highlighted the importance of Bio- informatics as related to the developments in biotechnology in general and the human genome project. Dr Saad Tayab conducted the programme.

Sardar Jafri
Inaugurating a two-day national seminar on the renowned poet and intellectual, Sardar Jafari under the auspices of AMU’s Department of Urdu, Vice Chancellor Mohammad Hamid Ansari said that Sardar Jafari has a very important place in India’s national life and literature. He was a far sighted poet and his association with this institution demanded that his memory be celebrated on a grand scale.
Welcoming renowned Urdu poets and critics from all over the country, Prof Asghar Abbas, head of the deptt of Urdu said Ali Sardar Jafari, an alumnus of AMU, was closely associated with modern and progressive literature as well as current politics and he kept alive the tradition of clean literature.
Delivering the keynote address Prof Sharib Rudaulvi of Jawaharlal Nehru University said that any mention or discussion on progressive literature in Urdu and literary achievements of twentieth century will be incomplete without mentioning Sardar Jafari’s name. Throughout his literary career, he portrayed humanism, broad-mindedness, peace and love through his poetry.
In his presidential address, Prof Mohammad Hasan said that there are only a few renowned sons whose memory is celebrated by their alma mater. Aligarh Muslim University is such an alma mater and Sardar Jafari is such a son.
