In the name of reservation
New Delhi: Opposing the demand for reservation for Muslims, the national joint conveners of All India Backward Muslim Front, Riazuddin and Rafeeq Alam, in a joint statement said that the political parties which are talking of reservation for Muslims are simply trying to get their votes by befooling them. They asked as to why this issue is being raised on the occasion of Assembly elections in UP and three other states when it is clearly laid down under section 16 (1) of the Constitution that no reservation can be allowed in the name of religion or community.
These leaders said that reservation to Muslims can now be given only under sections 340 and 342 of the Constitution. Though they were entitled to it previously under section 341 of the Constitution also but deprived of this benefit as far back as 1950 but no political party has so far taken up this issue of reservation under section 341. However, the Rashtriya Janata Dal government of Bihar got a resolution approved in the Bihar Assembly for granting reservation to Muslims under this section and a bill to this effect has been introduced in the Lok Sabha. q |
