Direct Hajj flight from Calicut

Calicut: A long cherished dream of the Muslim community in the State- a direct flight to the holy land for performing Hajj pilgrimage- was finally fulfilled when Air India’s Boeing 747 carrying 408 pilgrims, including an infant, on board, took off from the recently extended runway of the Calicut (Kozhikode) air port at 12-30 on 15th January.
The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Syed Shahnawaz Husain flagged off the flight. E Ahmed, MP, handed over the first boarding pass to Mariyam, a pilgrim from Kozhikode. The Minister for Industries and IT, PK Kunj Ali Kutty, presided over the function.
MK Muneer and Cherkalam Abdullah, Ministers, Abdussamad Samadani, MP, Binoy Vishwam, MLA, Joy Varghese, president Malabar Chamber of Commerce, MPM Ishaq Kurikkal, MLA were among those present. The Air India Commercial Director, VK Varma welcomed the gathering and the Airport Director, C Vijayakaumar proposed a vote of thanks.
As many as 7,125 pilgrims will fly direct from Calicut to Jeddah to perform the Hajj pilgrimage this year. A full-fledged Hajj camp with facilities for their customs checking and emigration clearance has been set up at the EMEA College near the Airport.
