Rich tributes paid to Shaikh Zayed

Sheikh ZayedA three-day conference in Abu Dhabi paid glowing tributes to Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Aal Nahyan, ruler of Abu Dhabi since 1966 and president of the 7-emirate union, the United Arab Emirates, since 1971.

In an international conference organized by the Zayed Centre for Heritage & History, scholars from many Arab, Muslim and western countries lauded Shaikh Zayed's achievements as a wise statesman. There was a consensus that Shaikh Zayed's leadership was crucial for the UAE's progress and prosperity. His contribution to Arab and Islamic causes, especially to the preservation of the Arab heritage, was highlighted. Shaikh Zayed’s recent recovery from illness provided the impetus to hold the conference amid popular display of joy in the Emirates where Zayed is a very popular figure.

Speakers included the former Yemeni president, Ali Nasir Muhammad, and such well-known figures as Fahmi Huwaidi of Al-Ahram, Palestinian thinker, Dr Ahmad Sidqi Al-Dajani, Jordanian litterateur Dr Nasiruddin Al-Asad, former Egyptian minister of economy, Dr Hasan Abbas Zaki, former Syrian culture minister Dr Najah Al-Attar, ISESCO general secretary Dr Abdul Aziz Al-Tuwaijiri, vice chancellor of Jordan's Aal-al-Bait University Dr Muhammad Adnan Al-Bakheet, Al-Azhar University vice chancellor Dr Ahmad Umar Hashim, Lebanese undersecretary for culture Dr Umar Ali Halablab, Cairo's Ain Shams University vice chancellor Dr Hasan Ahmad Ghallab, King Abdul Aziz Centre secretary general Dr Fahd ibn Abdallah Al-Sammari and many others including the MG editor, Dr Zafarul-Islam Khan who spoke at the conference as well as chaired a session.

Ain Shams University awarded Shaikh Zayed an honourary doctorate for his role in the preservation of environment.
