Numerous Mosques Desecrated
|New Delhi: For the last few years many
mosques have been desecrated throughout the country. Some mosques have
been completely taken over and converted into residential places, temples
or gurudwaras. In some mosques, Hindu rites are being observed on certain
special occasions and Hindu religious festivals are being celebrated. Some
mosques, after being occupied, collapsed because of negligence and absence
of maintenance while some others were willfully destroyed. There are many
mosques which are still incomplete because of opposition of local people.
The condition of some mosques is pitiable where there is no trustee or
where there is no one to take care of the mosque.
All mosques are ‘waqfs’ from religious or legal points of view and the
entire responsibility for their maintenance, upkeep etc is of Waqf boards
of respective states. Where there is no trustee, this responsibility is
taken care of by the Waqf, which appoints the managing committee in
consultation with the local Muslims.
Mosques are generally public properties. In some states their status is
like government properties for the purpose of security lest some one
should illegally occupy it or usurp it.
It is however a sorry state of affairs that whereas many new mosques are
coming up at various places, old mosques are being ignored and there is no
one to take care of them. The reason probably is that the waqf board of
the respective states does not look after them and the local Muslim
population is either so pre-occupied with other affairs or so indifferent
that it is not all bothered about these mosques and their proper
rehabilitation. They are also not aware of the ways and means which can be
taken to prevent them from illegal occupation or ruin. They have also
completely ignored mosques, which are under illegal occupation of others
or those that are in a state of utter neglect or dilapidation.
There are several mosques which have waqf’s properties and by whose
income expenses of mosques such as their maintenance, salaries of ‘muazzins’,
Imams, water & electricity expenses etc can be met but it is a pity
that those properties also have gone away along with the mosques or they
have been completely forgotten.
The All India Muslim Majlis Mushawarat has appealed to all Muslims to
voluntarily collect all information about vacant and unused mosques in
their respective areas, cities, towns, states etc, as a virtuous deed, or
those mosques which have been usurped illegally so that under a
country-wide movement, a programme could be worked out, in cooperation
with Muslim brethren and Waqf boards, for their recovery, rehabilitation,
repair etc, with the objective of starting prayers in those mosques
regularly. They are requested to obtain following information and forward
it to the Mushawarat:
1. Historical background of those mosques.
2. Historical construction of the mosques.
3. Present and apparent condition of the mosques.
4. Are those mosques under any one’s occupation? If so, under whose
occupation and since when and in what way are they being used?
5. Are those mosques under the supervision of Waqf Board?
6. Is there any trustee or any system prescribed by the managing
The above information should be sent to the All India Muslim Majlis
