Gyanvapi Mosque not BJP’s election issue!
|Varansi: BJP might very well have put Ayodhya, Mathura and Varansi issues on the backburner but people in general have not been able to understand as to what changes have taken place in Sangh Parivar, particularly VHP and BJP’s stand on Gyanvapi Mosque and Shankar Gauri temple situated in the mosque’s compound.
After analyzing the political pros and cons of Varansi’s Gyanvapi mosque, these organizations have put aside this issue for the time being.
After the 1992 incident in Ayodhya, the question of Gyanvapi mosque had also been raked up and since then this problem had become a headache for the government as well as the administration. In August 1995 when VHP insisted on performing ‘jal abhishek’ in the Gauri Shankar temple situated in the Gyanvapi mosque complex, police resorted to lathi charge to prevent them, as a result of which the devotees had become very much against the government.
Elections were held next year i.e. 1996 but in spite of best efforts of Sangh Parivar, this problem could not become an election issue. Later on also, in view of the changing political scenario and also with a view to extending its area of influence, BJP decided to keep this issue in the background. q
