| | Prof. M. Habib Memorial Lecture
By Md. Tauheed Ahmad
| Aligarh: Delivering the inaugural lecture of Prof. M. Habib Memorial Lecture Series, being organised at Aligarh Muslim University, eminent historian Prof. Irfan Habib criticized the Hindutva bandwagon for conspiring to change the syllabi of schools to achieve their narrow ends. He cautioned that the Hindu religion as symbolized by these fanatics is not the Hinduism of the Vedas or the Upanishads, it is the creation of Hegdewar and Golwarkar et al. Prof. Habib challenged their patriotism saying it was these people who kept themselves aloof from the freedom struggle and when they were by chance caught by the Britishers, they even offered to supply them with information about the kranti karis (freedom fighters) in order to free themselves. Prof. Habib said that the refusal of many universities to introduce courses in Vedic astrology and spoken Sanskrit was indeed a positive sign. He exhorted the scholars and intellectuals to come forward against this unholy agenda of the present government. Commenting on the credentials of Prof. Murli Manohar Joshi, he said that according to records, Prof. Joshi did not take even a single lecture in 20 years but attended all selection committees and drew his full salary. It is very unfortunate that people of such character are ruling the country.
