Writing of new history essential
Bangalore: The famous archaeologist, Dr SR Rao, while inaugurating a workshop organized under the auspices of Narashimha Research Foundation, said that in view of the fresh evidences available from archaeological sites during India’s history it needs to be rewritten. He said that on the basis of scientific study of recent excavations at Harappa, Mohen Jodaro and other places, it has become incumbent to reject the theory of Aryan attacks.
He further said that fresh evidences have confirmed that the people of Sindh were not much different from Vedic people (of Aryan race) in matters of language, religious beliefs, customs and traditions. He also emphasized the point that instead of repeating the unacceptable and unconfirmed theories propounded by western and also some Indian scholars, we should compile new history based on new information and discoveries.
Dr Rao, who had previously worked as marine archaeologist in the National Institute of Oceanography, further said that one of the reasons for decline and destruction of Sindh Valley civilization, which was spread from Iranian frontiers to Delhi and Kashmir to southern Gujarat, was natural calamities like frequent floods in Sindh, Saraswati and Sabarmati rivers. He also said that as a result of geological convulsions, dislocations and disturbances consequent upon earthquakes the river Saraswati was deprived of main sources of water. This and some other factors like earthquakes precipitated the decline of Sindh Valley civilization.
He further said that recent excavations indicate that there was no attack by marauders. Excavations at Harappa show that when the invaders came here, human population was non-existent there and the main enemies of the settlements around Saraswati and Sindh rivers were floods.
