Cause for Concern
We protest the persecution of Syed Abdul Rehman Geelani. We are also against the fact that the government and its agencies have tried to pronounce him guilty without first proving the charges levelled against him.
Indeed, it is for this reason that we continue to oppose the anti-terrorist ordinance POTO, knowing fully well that once charged under POTO, an innocent person has a very slim chance of proving his innocence.
We must remember that the rule of law in a democracy rests on the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
His torture in police custody and the illegal confinement of his wife and two children, both minors, by the Delhi police for three days is a cause for concern and we expect the National Human Rights Commission to take suo moto action in this matter.
Mr Geelani should not be tried under POTO and his civil rights should be restored with immediate effect. Besides, Delhi University must revoke the suspension order they have passed against him.
Surendra Mohan, Rajni Kothari, Syeda Hameed and 38 others, New Delhi
