Terrorists shocked
The destruction of an Israeli tank by a bomb planted by Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip has shocked many in Israel. This is the first time that the Palestinians have been able to destroy a heavily armoured Israeli vehicle which until now have operated with impunity. The Merkava tank was totally destroyed and three of its crew were killed outright. This latest attack may represent a significant escalation in the Palestinians ability to fight back against the Israeli army.
The Merkava battle tank is seen by many Israelis as a symbol of the country's military prowess. It is one of the most modern and heavily protected tanks in the world.
The explosion was sufficient to penetrate the vehicle, to topple the tank on its side and to blow-off its heavy turret.
Israelis attack from air and sea
Gaza City: In a predawn raid on 20 Feb. Israeli army, using US-supplied F-16 warplanes, Apache helicopters and naval boats, attacked Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat's beachside Gaza City headquarters, killing at least five officers of the elite Force 17 and wounding 10.
French FM attacks Israel
Paris: French Foreign Minister Hubert Vedrine called on the Unite d States on 7 Feb. to use its "immense authority" on Israel to end its aggression against the Palestinian people and to respect the efforts made to achieve political solution to the Middle East crisis. "I want to express here the hope that, while the Israeli prime minister visits Washington, President Bush can use the immense authority, the immense influence of the United States towards a political solution," Vedrine told French senators during a question session. ''Israel's current policy is one of pure repression ...and cannot lead to security and even less to a political solution", Vedrine said.
In Madrid, Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Pique whose country holds the rotating presidency of the European Union condemned the recent Israeli military strikes in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
