Beware of provocateurs
By Zafar Agha

The acts of barbarism let loose by PAC against Muslims in Kanpur is nothing new for the Muslim minority of this country. PAC’s enmity against Muslims has a long history of its own and cities like Moradabad, Meerut, Maliana and many more are a witness to this historical fact. It is a different matter that no one has ever raised an accusing finger over its barbarian and one-sided acts. Hence, if it has indulged in firing against Muslims, it is nothing new and what they have done in Kanpur is only a repetition of what they have always done.

There is a hue and cry in the newspapers that Muslims fired on the police in Kanpur from a mosque as result of which a high-ranking police officer was killed. But the news received by us is different. The fact is that the procession that led to the firing was not taken out by the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) at all. According to our sources, it was a protest demonstration taken out by the Congressmen of Kanpur after the government’s bribery and other scandals were exposed by tehelka.com and in which they were demanding the resignation of Atal Bihari Vajpayee government. They were also going to burn his effigy. When the procession reached near the BJP’s office there was exchange of hot words between the police, which was already present there, and the processionists. The police officer present there asked his men not to fire and as soon as he tried to talk to the processionists, there was sudden firing from the police which hit the officer as a result of which the innocent was killed then and there. His body was left lying there for hours. The wife and children of the deceased are still holding the police and PACs responsible for his death. But there is no one to listen to them.

The matter is very simple. When the BJP president was shown through the tehelka.com camera accepting bribe and the news spread throughout the country that high-ranking personalities of BJP, which talked of bringing about Ram Rajya, are involved in corruption, BJP became nervous. In order to divert people’s attention from these misdeeds of BJP leaders and irregularities of government, efforts are being made to give the Kanpur incidents a communal colour. This is nothing new. Some years ago when the Congress was the target of countrywide criticism on account of Bofors, at that time also Muslims were singled out for police and PAC’s barbarism. The objective in all cases, including the recent incidents of Kanpur, has been to create communal tension and divert people’s attention from government misdeeds.

The Vajpayee government has in fact lost the confidence of the people. Economic crisis is becoming deeper and deeper. The budget recently presented has disappointed even the sympathizers of BJP. Under the pressure of the World Bank, the government is abolishing many big and small posts. Giant government undertakings like BALCO are either being sold out at much lower prices or are being shut down. Agricultural products are in abundance but these cannot be disposed of. Farmers have been compelled to resort to ‘distress sales’ at much lower prices, thereby reducing their incomes. Unemployment is on the rise. Misdeeds and irregularities of the government have been exposed. Obviously the government is on shaky grounds and the Kanpur riots are one of the their weapons to divert people’s attention.

It is now feared that the Sangh Parivar will once again be plotting to sow seeds of discord by fomenting Hindu-Muslim riots. If organizations like Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal are inciting the BJP to spread the fire of communal hatred and enmity between Hindus and Muslims, Muslim communal organizations will also be needed to play their own role in creating an explosive atmosphere which will enable the people to forget the misdeeds of the government. Somewhat similar things had happened before the demolition of the Babri Masjid. If on one side the VHP and BD people were calling Muslims as descendants of Babar, leaders of the Babri Masjid Action Committee were inciting the feelings of Muslims by delivering fiery speeches. Between the slogans of Jai Shri Ram and N’ara-e-Takbir, communalism increased to such an extent that the BJP has now become the ruling party and the country is gradually but steadily drifting towards a Hindu Rashtra.

As a matter of fact this is a political conspiracy of which innocent Muslims have been victim for the last half a century. An important element of such a strategy has been to create an extremist organization of Muslims which could incite their religious susceptibilities and impel them to take to streets, resulting in firing by police and PAC and then rumours and baseless charges against Muslims would be publicized, atmosphere and impression unfavourable to Muslims and their interests would be created through government and news media in order to further create feelings of bitterness and hatred against Muslims among the Hindus and when the time of elections comes, Hindus would cast their votes in favour of BJP and in this way a fanatic Hindu government may rule the country!.

Muslims should keep this in mind that the Sangh Parivar once again wants to create a tense atmosphere in the country by exciting religious and cultural passions and Hindu-Muslim enmity. Burning of the Holy Qur’an in Delhi and temples and mosques in Kanpur are clear indications that the strategy of communalism is once again being used towards this end. It is therefore the prime duty of Muslims not to allow themselves to be led away by passions. They should bear in mind that whosever tries to provoke them are in some way or the other is linked to the BJP and its outfits. They should keep their passions under control, otherwise in the first place they will become victims of PAC and police as happened in Kanpur and in the second place, the BJP, which is now becoming unpopular among the people, will come to power yet again and further strengthen its supporting organization. It is therefore very essential that care should be taken against provocative organizations and people should be warned against such outfits (translated from Urdu).
