Court acquits 39 for lack of evidence in Bhagalpur riot case
Local court has acquitted 39 accused in one of the cases relating to killing of 24 people at Chakjhora locality in the 1989 Bhagalpur riots.
The seventh Additional District and Sessions Judge of Bhagalpur, SS Rampuri, on Friday absolved the accused of the charges of killing, arsoning and rioting and acquitted them citing lack of evidences, according to a PTI report from Bhagalpur.
The case relates to killing of 24 people by a gang which stormed the Chakjhora village under Rajaun Police Station in Bhagalpur district on October 28, 1989.
Over 1,000 people had been killed during the riots in the entire Bhagalpur which broke out following disturbances over immersion of an idol. Army had to be deployed when the situation went out of control of the district administration during the violence.
