Afghan refugees abandoned

Islamabad: The inmates of the Jalluzi Refugee Camp that houses 60,000 Afghan refugees are living amid a deluge of hurricanes, lightning, rain, squalour and floods, that destroyed their abodes, under open skies. As the world community decides to disregard them, the Pakistani Government has made it clear that due to financial constraints it is not able to improve the situation and would like them to be repatriated to their country at the earliest.

The UN High Commission for Refugees has said, on the other hand, that Afghan refugees still continue to pour into Pakistan, on a daily basis, despite the closure two months ago of the entry points by Pakistan. According to the Commission, the refugees are fleeing the drought made worse by fighting in their country between the Taliban administration and the the northern alliance.

Observers say that the war and the drought threaten the lives of at least one million Afghans, who are likely to perish within a year, and that 75 percent of the people of Afghanistan suffer from malnutrition, and that medical supplies have been reduced to less than half, due to the sanctions that have been slapped on the country. They say that this deficit is likely to rise to as much as 90 percent.
