NEWSMAKERS: 1-15 May 2002

NASIM AHMAD, financial commissioner and principal secretary, Government of Haryana, has been appointed as the new vice chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University. His term will last for five years. Born on 4 September 1947, he did B Sc from Agra University, LL B from Meerut University, LL M from Aligarh Muslim University, M Phil from Punjab University and PG Diploma from Indian Institute of Public Administration. Nasim Ahmad had been a prominent student of AMU. He started his practical life as justice and judicial magistrate from Aligarh. He held the post form January 1971 to June 1972. He joined Haryana cadre as IAS officer in July 1972. Besides holding several other managing and administrative government posts he has remained administrator of the Punjab Waqf Board and court member of AMU during 1984-85. He has also remained court member of Maharishi Dyanand University, Rohtak and at present he is a member of executive council of Haryana Agricultural University.

In spite of his declining fortune, the software magnate AZIM HASHEM PREMJI remains the sole Indian to make the grade among the 50 richest persons of the world. According to the rich list 2002, Premji with a fortune of 4.5 billion pounds down from 4.8 billion pounds in 2001, is the 49th richest person in the world. King Fahad of Saudi Arabia with a fortune of 17.8 billion pounds is the 6th richest man of the world. Prince Al-Walid with 14.2 billion pounds remains on 10th grade, while the Shaikh of Abu Dhabi with 13.6 billion pounds remains 11th richest in the world.

Former All Parties Hurriyat Conference chairman MIRWAIZ UMAR FAROOQ figures among the American magazine, Time’s 20 young Asians who have achievements to their credit at their young age. According to reports, profiles of the young celebrities are being prepared and they would be invited to a function, in the United States, being organized by the prestigious magazine. Other young Asian celebrities included future Dalai Lama, Karmapa and star cricketer Sachin Tendulakar.

ABDUS SAMI SALMANI has been appointed chairman of the Delhi State Haj Committee. He succeeds Haji Anis Durrani whose three-year term has ended. Former chairman of the Delhi Haj Committee Anis Durrani while handing over the charge to the newly elected chairman thanked people for their cooperation in running the Committee smoothly.

NORINA AKHTAR of Rajouri district of Kashmir has stood first in All India Vocational competition sponsored by Special Services Bureau, Government of India, at its training centre at Shimla, Himachal Pradesh. 40 women from all over India participated in the month long vocational training programme, conducted to help them establish cottage industry in different trades including candle making, soap making, weaving, embroidery and grinding etc, to enable them to add to their family income. Norina believes that the training has proved full of fun and a source to understand different faiths, cultures, customs and the languages of different parts of India.

SHAHNAZ HABIB is among the 30 Indians who are selected for the Ford Foundation fellowship programme which will start from the current academic year. The fellowship funds all expenses related to postgraduate and doctoral studies of the fellows any where in the world.
Shahnaz Habib did her BA in English Literature from St. Teresa's College, Eranakulam, Kerala and has worked as an editor with Sage Publication, New Delhi. She plans to do a postgraduate programme in media studies with special focus on the way media constructs images of various social groups. Her research programme will have specific reference to the way the Muslim community has been targeted as fundamentalists and terrorists as well as the portrayal of men and women by the media.

Bharatiya Janata Party received one more shock as its senior vice president of Kashmir unit ABDUL RAHSID KABULI has resigned from the party’s primary membership. Speaking about his resignation Kabuli said that Muslims are being ceaselessly killed in Gujarat and that no action has been taken against BJP MP and founder member of Bajrang Dal Vinay Katiyar who has passed indecent remarks about the Mue Mubarak (hair preserved in Hazratbal, Kashmir) of the Prophet Muhammad (Pbuh).
