Advani jams J&K, N-E
New Delhi: Home Minister LK Advani has shot down a proposal to allow cellphones in Jammu and Kashmir and the North-east. Communications Minister Pramod Mahajan had put to the Cabinet a proposal to take mobile telephony to the country’s most high-security regions. Cellphones would help integrate into the national mainstream part of the country long suffering from a sense of neglect, it was argued, and help control secessionism. Security forces in Jammu and Kashmir were opposed to cellphones in the state, sources said.
At the moment, even STD and ISD services are banned in call booths in the Valley. q |
