Fascists occupy Mosques

A number of mosques, graveyards and dargahs belonging to the Muslim community have been forcibly occupied and still continue to remain so in the riot-hit Gujarat. Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) president and Member of Parliament (MP) Ghulam Mahmood Banatwalla through missives had earlier apprised the Prime Minister and Gujarat Governor of the prevailing situation and extreme resentment amongst the Muslims. Besides sending letters, Mr. Banatwalla has also sent a detailed list of the number of mosques, graveyards and dargahs under illegal occupation of Hindus. Though, Mr. Banatwalla said that this list is not complete as it would be only after the restoration of normalcy in the strife-ridden state that more details would be forthcoming.

Mr. Banatwalla said that more than 100 mosques have either been destroyed or converted into temples with idols prominently installed. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee has been urged to take immediate steps to survey and assess the damages and urgent action be taken for the construction and restoration of the illegally occupied religious places, Mr. Banatwalla said. q
