Verma hits out at Hindutvites
Bangalore: Hitting out at Hindu protagonists, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Chairperson Justice J S Verma on 18 May asked the people not to permit them to misuse the concept of Hindutva, saying it posed danger to the religion and the country's unity and integrity.
He said anyone talking of religion as a divisive tool should be rejected, and added, "The real danger to the nation is from the people within. We must guard ourselves against dangers from within."
Inaugurating the Centre for Study of Casteism, Communalism and the Law at the National Law School of India University here, he however said it was a matter of relief that the communal flare up in some parts of Gujarat was confined to that state only and did not spread elsewhere in the country.
Verma also defended his position opposing the controversial POTA, saying he was not averse to making specific laws to deal with any crime or situation but there was no need for new laws when existing ones were adequate. (PTI) q |
