God of Muslims is God of all
By Maulana Akhlaq Husain Qasmi

One of our senior intellectuals has given to one of his long articles the heading ‘Muslims have no God’ which is in fact a hemistich of Allama Iqbal’s poem Shikwa (Complaint). The hemistich in full is:
Taana denge but ke Muslim ka Khuda koi naheen
(Idols will taunt that Muslims have no God).

I don’t know what reply the late Allama has given in his Jawaab-e-Shikwa (Reply to the complaint) to this; but the reply to this dictum given by the Qur’an is indicative or proof of the eternal greatness of Islam. Giving a call to human beings to have faith in God, the Qur’an has said: ‘All praise be to Allah who is God of the entire worlds. O ye people, repose your faith in God who is not only your God but God of all and sundry. He lords over every body, is God of the entire universe. He listens to everyone and removes the pains and afflictions of all? This is the first and foremost lesson and message of the Holy Qur’an. Other religious communities had divided God. The follower of every religion believed in God who was specific to an individual community and listened to his prayers. Jews believed in their God (God of Jews) and worshipped him who answered to their prayers only.

Brahminism in India had divided god in such a way that, according to them, god had produced them (Brahmins) from a part of his head and rest of the creations came into existence from others of his parts. But Qur’an said ‘No, it is not so. Real God is God of every one and every body. He is God of the whole world. He has conveyed this message through his Prophet who is a bliss for the whole world.

Christians believed in God who was father of Mary’s son and who had delegated his son equipped with every thing. Progenies of Hazrat Ibrahim (Quraish community of Makkah) had created the concept of great god and small, subordinate gods among whom they had divided themselves. Every tribe worshipped and prayed to its own subordinate god.

God of the whole world listens to the requests and prayers of all, whether oppressors or the oppressed, believers or non-believers (Holy Hadiths). In Madina when a Jew was killed by a Muslim, the holy Prophet got the murderer Muslim killed in punishment. When some Muslims expressed their dislike over this, he said: I have the greatest responsibility of implementing the agreement and to administer justice to the oppressed and wronged people in my capacity as the head and ruler of Madina. (Hadith). The most respectable person of Muslim society, Siddiq Akbar (Abu Bakr) once slapped a petty date-seller who was a Jew. He got angry because being in a Muslim country, the Jew was saying that his prophet Moosa (Moses) was the greatest among all prophets of God. The Holy Prophet, on hearing the complaint of this Jew, summoned Abu Bakr and ordered him to make amends with the Jew otherwise he will be punished.

Also, the Holy Prophet has clearly presented the Qur’anic law in respect of the honour and sanctity of the religious sentiments of every community and nation. The Qur’an has ordered the Muslims not to utter any disrespectful words against any one who, according to his religion, invokes the help and blessings of any other person or power lest he should say any thing unjust or disrespectful to their only God. In that case the entire responsibility for all that will be theirs (of Muslims).

Thereafter, giving the example of parents, he said: Do not say any thing disrespectful, or bad to your parents. People asked him as to who is there who says any thing disrespectful to his parents. In reply, he said: If you say something bad to other’s parents, he will retaliate by saying the same disrespectful things or words to your parents. In that case you will be responsible for any thing disrespectful being said to your parents, as if you have abused and insulted your parents. (Holy Hadith).

This is the belief of every body’s God. If ever the holy Prophet lost his temper on any one of his enemies and if, overcome by anger, he happened to curse him, every body’s God conveyed His message to him:

‘O Muhammad, you have no right to say any thing to him in this matter. If their God so desires, He may shower His mercy on them after guiding them to the right path, or He may punish them in any way He likes because they are oppressors and cruel people. (Ale-Imran:129)

In the battle of Uhud when he was injured by his enemies, he had uttered this much only: How that nation can succeed who injured its Prophet who gives a call to it to come towards God. On this one sentence only, the command was given ‘Islam preaches to have faith and belief in every body’s God and to follow the religion of everybody’s God. Every Muslim should act upon and follow the command of God and practice patience and tolerance in the freedom of religious beliefs, respect of religious beliefs and religious affairs.

He should see and consider how everybody’s God is treating His creations. He is rewarding bad people also together with good people. He is not depriving the disobedient people of His mercies and bounties in spite of their disobedience. In this connection, Maulana Ashraf Thanwi’s successor, the great Mufti of Pakistan, Mufti Muhammad Shafi has mentioned this holy Hadith: ‘O ye people, you don’t judge the sins of My slaves as if you yourselves are their masters and creators’. Thereafter, the Mufti has quoted the following couplet of Hafiz Shirazi:

‘O Sheikh, sin is the mirror or reflection of God’s pardon and bliss. Therefore do not treat the sinners with contempt’. (Translated from Urdu)
