VHP wants to take out Rathyatra
|Ahmedabad: The VHP favoured taking out the “traditional” rathyatra in Ahmedabad next month, saying "it symbolises the cultural unity of the country".
VHP's Gujarat unit President Dilipbhai Trivedi said on 19 June in a statement that like each year, various trusts and organisations "would extend full cooperation to the rathyatra of Lord Jagannath on July 12" and meet trustees of the Jagannath temple to assure them of their help and assistance in this regard.
The rathyatra should be taken out through its traditional route, he said adding, police and administration should take whatever steps they consider significant to ensure smooth and peaceful passage of the procession.
Meanwhile, city police commissioner K.R. Kaushik has reportedly sent a note to the home department suggesting that the rathyatra be avoided this year because of the tense situation. The rathyatra, comprising three chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balram and sister Subhadra begins from the famous Jagannath temple located in Jamalpur early in the morning. After passing through the congested roads and bylanes of the walled areas of the city, the rathyatra reaches the temple late in the evening.
Chief Minister Narendra Modi said on Monday the state government has not taken any decision to allow the rathyatra and also feigned ignorance over the police commissioner's letter (Times of India, June 20).
Modi is VHP’s hero # 3
New Delhi, Thursday, June 20, 2002: The VHP, whose activists are accused of engineering communal violence in Gujarat, said 'Hindutva' would be the main plank of the coming elections to the State Assembly and described Chief Minister Narendra Modi as the "third hero" of the majority community. "Modi has emerged as the third hero of Hindutva after VHP International Working President Ashok Singhal and Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray," the Sangh parivar outfit's International General Secretary Praveen Togadia told reporters here on Wednesday 21st inst. He said the "secular media" by constantly blaming Modi for the violence in Gujarat has made him a hero of the community. Togadia claimed that the elections to the state Assembly would be won on the basis of Hindutva.
"It would be a battle between those espousing Hindutva and those against it and the former will win hands down," the firebrand leader said. He alleged that even Congress workers openly came out in support of the Hindus during the recent violence in the state. The VHP leader dared Congress to campaign against Hindutva in Gujarat. Peace in India only by Indo Pak war: VHP
Kanpur, June 17: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) General Secretary Praveen Bhai Togadia today said a war between India and Pakistan was inevitable as it was the only way to end terrorism and unrest in the country.

Mr Togadia said that leaders should also realise that total demolition of Pakistan- as a nation was a must for permanent peace in India. ''Hamare Bas Mein Yeh Huwa to Ham Ese Ek Din Jarur Kareinge (If it was possible for us to do so we one day shall like to do)'', the VHP leader said UNI, 17 June).
BJP practising Muslim appeasement: VHP
Kanpur, Jun 17 (UNI) The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) today charged all political parties including the Bharatiya Janta Party(BJP) with practising Muslim appeasement.
Talking to reporters here today, VHP General Secretary Dr Praveen Bhai Togadia said latest instance of the attitude was evident during the political discussions over the candidate for the presidential elections.
Dr Togadia said that every political party appeared practising Muslim appeasement during the discussions, ''which was really deplorable.'' However, VHP did endorse the candidature of missile man Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, he said adding that Dr Kalam did not symbolise any community or sect. Mr Togadia said VHP had never opposed the lineage of Rahim and Ras Khan but did oppose Gauri and Ghaznavi and the organisation felt that Kalam was in the lineage of Rahim and Ras Khan.
He said that no rational individual in the country would express dissent to the candidature of Dr Kalam who is a chaste Indian and a scientist of extra-ordinary calibre (UNI, 17 June). q
