First Muslim lawyer girl of Darbhanga in 95
years
By Syed Mohammad Iqbal
Darbhanga: People looked at Ms. Shabnam
Jehan with disbelief when the young lady appeared in the court arguing a
case. Shabnam created a new history and added a moment of pride for her
family and the community when she became the first Muslim lady of
Darbhanga to adorn the robe of a lawyer.
Darbhanga is the undeclared capital of culturally-rich Mithalanchal and a
bastion of Maithili Brahamins. It would be very difficult to forget the
wealth and contribution of Darbhanga Maharaj in social emancipation.
Though Darbhanga has a large concentration of Muslims who remain deprived
of higher education compared to the majority community. It was a moment of
satisfaction that a Muslim lady had come out to join the crucial sector of
judiciary.
This is for the first time in the last 95 years’ history of Darbhanga
judiciary that a Muslim girl has become a lawyer, said Darbhanga Bar
Association chairman Ram Asrey Babu. Daughter of retired district judge,
Mohammad Yusuf, Shabnam Jehan is the second good news for the Muslim women
as only a few days ago Ms. Shahla Nigar had stood second in the
prestigious Civil Services Examinations, conducted by the Union Public
Service Commission and she has opted for the Indian Administrative Service
and opted the cadre of her home state of Bihar.
