Madrasas and future of Indian Muslims
By Manzar Imam

New Delhi: All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat (Salim Qasimi group) organized a convention on ‘Islamic Madrasas and the future of Indian Muslims’ on 15 July, at New Delhi’s Constitution Club.

Speaking at the convention, Maulana Syed Wali Rahmani said that a report recently issued by a group of ministers contains a number of objectionable comments about Muslims. He said that the government has formed a committee to watch and check the activities of Madrasas. The Maulana added that a picture has been painted which creates doubts about Muslims and madrasas and shows them . as ‘high risk factors’. The report also says that the madrasas and specially the ones in border areas are funded by Gulf countries and that militants are being trained there. Muslims are blamed for supplying weapon from bordering areas. He said that its the responsibility of every Muslim to take notice of this report. He added that if timely action is not taken, this trend will pose problems in future. Speaking about the sacrifices of the ulama, Maulana Rahmani quoted Gandhiji as having said that if these Maulvis of Madrasas would not have stood for freedom, India could have never been freed.

Maulana Kalbe Jawwad emphasized the need for Muslim unity. He said that every conspiracy could be foiled if Muslims display their unanimous strength. Former central minister CM Ibrahim said the madrasas have been playing an important role in imparting education among the poor and the needy. They have been successful in educating people in remote villages even under trying circumstances. Maulana Obaidullah Khan Azmi, MP, said the report on national security has been drafted by some known elements. He said that we can foil their conspiracy by our unity. He added that if any madrasa or mosque is really found guilty of nurturing militants, it should be closed down. But we know for certain that even a single madrasa or mosque has never been found to be an ISI den. Maulana.Asrarul Haque Qasimi of the Milli Council said that by casting aspersions on madrasas and their graduates the extremist elements are trying to discourage Muslims. Shri Jogi Sahil Nath of Vishwa Dharam Shanti Sangathan said that I oppose people who want madrasas to be closed. He further said that if we don’t know about the Qur’an, the Gita and the Mahabharata we are ignorant.

Maulana Amiduzzaman Keranwi said the steps have been taken to create doubts about madrasas in our country, but till today there has been not a single proof to point fingers at these educational institutions.

Mushawarat chief Maulana Salim Qasimi said that whenever we suffer from something we should keep it in mind so that the same mistake is not repeated. He said that nobody could deny the fact that these madrasas are sources of knowledge. He said that the picture of the Muslims which the report endeavours to present is twisted and forged and has no relation with facts. He further said that if Muslims adhere to the teachings of Islam, they will successfully face any challenges.
