Bohras not non-Muslims
|I was amazed by the Milli Gazette piece on Bohra leaders. Working as a journalist for a leading Hindi daily, I reported financial news on Muslim communities.’
Regretting even today to have written an article on Bohra Muslims of whom I surprisingly held misconceptions, I recall having ignorantly written trash allowing myself to be influenced by some dubious Bohra “social reformists.”
I vividly remember a Muslim friend of mine, then an auditor in the Waqf Board call me up after going through my article asking me to come to my senses. He said the Bohras were known to hire the best of auditors. Monetary contributions in the community credited as they are per national laws are regularly submitted not only to the Government of India’s financial institutes like the Office of Charity Commissioner but also scrutinised by Waqf authorities.
Isn’t the Qur'anic principle (2:275-276) on avoidance of interest, shared by most branches of Islam? Then why should the Dawoodi Bohra leaders be called hypocrites and criticised for abstaining from interest-bearing accounts and transactions.
