Indian Democracy in Danger: VP Singh
Former Indian Prime Minister Vishwanath Pratap Singh said that with the rise of Hindutva forces, the very essence of Indian democracy is in danger. He was speaking to activists and community leaders gathered in Chicago at the invitation of noted Dalit leader Dr.Rahul Dipankar. Lashing out at Sangh Parivar, Singh said, "In India communalism is the instrument to fascism. Unless we diagnose this disease completely,we will not have the answer."
Singh criticized the current Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee for his failure in preventing the massacre of Muslims in Gujarat. "Vajpayee said that his head is bowed down in shame (because of the Gujarat killings). I ask what were your hands doing ?" he questioned.
He said that if the current hostilities between Hindus and Muslims in India can no longer be allowed to continue. "We have to resolve. We have no other choice. If the action-reaction and then action-reaction scenario continues then our country will become another Bosnia."
Mr.Rashed Salam, Chicago area President of AFMI, said that India is in dire need of people like VP Singh. "We need a Bharat Bachao Party (Save India Party) as compared to the ruling Bharat Jalao Party (Burn India Party). We need direction. Together we can stop the march of fascism," he said.
Dr.Rahul Dipankar said that the Non-Resident Indian community has woken up and will not tolerate injustice anymore. "NRI's will speak out against any injustice everywhere. We will work together towards this goal," he said.
Dr. Shobha Singh, Rev. J.P.Sanga, Prof.Ahmedullah Siddiqui, Mrs Annapurna Balakrishnan, Mr.Rajinder Singh,Mr.Rohinton and others also spoke at the event.
