Delhi: Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared in loud and clear
terms that Islamic madrasas (schools) are fountains of learning and
accusing them of being centers of ISI activities is false and baseless.
The prime minister declared this while addressing a representative
delegation of about 500 Muslims, comprising of Imams of different mosques,
ulama, Muslim preachers, scholars, intellectuals from all over the
country, including Sayed Shahid Mehdi, VC, Jamia Millia Islamia, Siraj
Hussain, VC, Jamia Hamdard, Omar Abdullah, minister of state for external
affairs. They had gone to his residence to congratulate him for holding
the Agra Summit and also to seek certain clarifications about the report
of the group of ministers in which some aspersions were cast on Islamic
madrasas and Muslims in general.
The prime minister further said that these madrasas, their teachers, ulama
and students have played a very important and dynamic role in the
country's war of independence and freedom movement which he himself and
his government admit. The delegation was led by Syed Shah Nawaz, union
minister of state for coal.
