Senior information service officer shahzad mohammed khan has been appointed press secretary to President APJ Abdul Kalam. Khan took over the charge on August 7. A 1982 batch IIS officer, Khan has been the spokesperson of CBI for 13 years and he had been working as principal information officer of the investigating agency since 1989. A gold medalist in LLB and LLM, he obtained his M Sc from the University of Wales. Before taking over the charge in CBI, he had worked in the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Directorate of Audio Visual Publishing and All India Radio (AIR).

Former central minister Prof. saifuddin soz formally joined Congress party on August 8. Mrs Sonia Gandhi, President of All India Congress Committee (AICC) welcomed him in the party. Soz was earlier in Jammu and Kashmir National Conference.

Former coach of Mohammaden Club, prominent footballer jamshed nasri took over the charge of coach of Mohammaden AC of Calcutta Football League on August 7. He succeeds Rahmatullah Khan who will play as a defensive player in the team. Member, mayor-in -council (health) and patron of the club Jawed Ahmad Khan, its general secretary Ali Hussain (Sonu), football secretary Rashid Ali Khan and several other members were present on the occasion. In answer to a question Nasri said that to coach a star-studded team was an easy task but to train young players was a tough job. Nasri, an Iranian footballler joined Mohammaden Sporting in 1982 and left it in 1985 but rejoined the team after one year and played for seven consecutive years. Later he went to Maharashtra and was nominated coach of Bengal Mumbai Football Club. Government of Maharashtra honoured him with a special award for leading the team to victory in national football championship. Nasri is the only foreign coach in any Calcutta football club.

marghoob haider abidi has been recently appointed secretary of Delhi Urdu Academy. The activities of the Academy had virtually come to a stop for a long time as there was no secretary. Though interviews for the post were conducted on July 4, selection was delayed due to a controversy over rejecting the application of a candidate and not calling him for the interview. Abidi's appointment too is seen as technically controversial, because his appointment was made as an Urdu translator who is now working on deputation which may put a question mark on his appointment as a man cannot serve on two deputations at a time. On the other hand there has been a wide spread condemnation among literary circles against a mere13 per cent increment in salaries of part-time teachers of the Academy as they had already been getting poor salaries. They have demanded a higher increment.

prof abdul ghani bhat was once again unanimously elected chairman of All India Hurriyat Conference during a meeting of a 7-member executive council. He was elected for one year at a closed door meeting on August 10 in Rajpbagh, Srinagar.

Saharanpur district advisor to chief minister Mayawati, and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader liyaqat ali, has been nominated director of Uttar Pradesh Minorities Financial Corporation. His term will be for two years. Party workers are happy over his appointment. A reception was given to him by Saharanpur district chairman of BSP, Jagyal Singh.

Social activist syed amir ahmad has been nominated member of Delhi State Haj Committee by its chairman Abdus Sami Salmani. Syed Amir is the assistant general secretary of Minorities Department of Delhi State Congress Committee. His father Syed Azhar Hussain Hashmi is also a well-known social activist.
Member of Legislative Assembly ramzan khan has been appointed president of BJP's minorities' cell while Chaudhry Shah Muhammad has been made general secretary. Those who have been appointed vice president are: shaukat ansari (Jaipur), rahat hussain (Kolkata), tanveer haider usmani (Kanpur) and muhammad yusuf (Gwalior). Those appointed secretaries are: fayyaz ahmad bhat (Anantnag, J&K), wasim ahmad (Allahabad), manzoor ansari (Jharkhand) and ms noor jahan sheikh (Mumbai). shaukat muhammad khan has been nominated treasurer.

prof afzal muhammad, former vice chancellor of Dr BR Ambedkar Open University and Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University has been appointed vice president of minorities' Planning Co-ordination Minority Board. He took over the charge on July 31. Former chief engineer Muhammad Karimullah Khan is the president of the Board. 

Samajwadi Party leader muhammad azam khan has been included in the list of leaders whose lives are in danger. While giving details of the looming danger to his life, Azam Khan said that plans had been made for his murder within the boundaries of Uttar Pradesh Assembly. He said that the incident could take place anytime as there were no security guards for the leaders of opposition as against 30 jawans who are deployed for the security of the chief minister. It should be noted that Apna Dal MLA Atiq Ahmad was attacked on August 7 right under the nose of police on the premises of Allahabad High Court.

New boxing star muhammad ali qamar of Kolkata who won gold medal in the Commonwealth Games after defeating his British rival Darren Langley in Manchester in 48-kg class on August 3 by two points is afraid of excessive praise. The 22-year old Qamar, an Eastern Railay employee said after his return to Kolkata that these praises might divert his attention from the game. But he was firm and said that his next target was to win medals in Asian games. He complains that he did not get much assistance from Bengal Boxing Federation before his victory. West Bengal Chief Minister Budhadev Bhattacharya has announced to name a boxing ring after Qamar.

faqir ali, son of former cricketer Abdid Ali and nishat fatima, daughter of former test player and wicket keeper Syed Kirmani are going to tie nuptial knots. Krimani and Abid represented Hyderabad in Ranji Trophy Championships in 1970s. They played several long-partnerships in cricket. Faqir Ali is a regional director in a Multi Media Company in California.

israel pahalwan, a disciple of Khalifa Muhammad Kamil won the title of best wrestler at the grand wrestling championship held in Delhi on the occasion of India's 55th Independence Day. About 80 wrestling bouts were fought. After 10 minutes of interesting fight, Israel defeated Rajiv Pahalwan and won the title of best wrestler. In another fight Amir defeated Satish. Prizes among the wrestlers were distributed at the end.

Hailing from Shamli in Muzaffarnagar district of western UP, anwar sultan who missed a gold medal in the recent Commonwealth Games, led India to win two gold medals at the Asian Clay Shooting Championship in Bangkok on August 15 . He shot 114 points out of 125 in the first round and 24 out of 25 in the final round totaling 138 to win an individual gold medal. Later his efforts led Indian team to clinch another gold medal.
