POLICE ALERT
New Delhi: The Union home ministry has
cautioned police forces throughout the country to be on guard to prevent
clashes between Hindus and Muslims that may erupt if the US launches
strikes in Afghanistan.
The caution was issued following reports about violent incidents between
people of the two communities. A home ministry official, however, said
that these were local problems and added that chiefs of all state police
forces have been instructed to watch for trouble and be careful in
handling any possible eruptions of violence.
There are reports that the UP government has sounded an alert to prevent
clashes between Hindus and Muslims if the United States carries out
retaliatory attacks in Afghanistan. A senior official of the UP government
said that the possibility of clashes between Hindus and Muslims could not
be ruled out, adding that uncertainty prevailed in sensitive pockets of
the state. He said that the police had already received reports that
resentment was brewing in certain sections...against America’s
declaration of war against Osama bin Laden. In Jammu and Kashmir, a senior
police official was reported to have said that precautions had been taken
to prevent clashes in Muslim-dominated districts of Jammu region if the
United States attacked Afghanistan. q |
