Gilani held under trumped up charges: PUDR
The People's Union for Democratic Rights (PUDR) today demanded revocation of charges against Kashmir Times journalist Iftikar Gilani who has been in judicial custody for three months for alleged violation of official secrets act.
In its report, the PUDR alleged that Iftikar was being victimised as "he is a Kashmiri Muslim and related to arrested Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Gilani".
Gilani was arrested on June 9 on charges of possessing classified documents and booked under the official secrets act and later remanded in judicial custody by a city court.
His father-in-law SAS Gilani was arrested under the prevention of terrorism act (POTA) and is now lodged in Ranchi Jail.
"It was inverted logic which was used against Gilani. The defendent's pleas regarding the relevance of the facts have been denied under the provisions of the act ... The charges under OSA have been followed by another charge of obscenity on the basis of one e-mail when anybody accessing the internet is aware of the extent of junk messages in circulation," PUDR secretary Deepika Tandon said.
Demanding immediate revocation of the charges against Gilani, PUDR said OSA is another law like POTA which "gives the law-enforcers unlimited power". q |
