Saffron moves to polarise voters
By Obaid Nasir, Lucknow
As
an after thought the UP govt has ordered to register a case against Ashok
Singhal, SC Dixit, Acharya Giriraj Kishore and 40 others under section 186
IPC. These VHP leaders had barged into the prohibited area of disputed Ram
Temple. At first the state administration had denied that such incident
took place but after the displeasure shown by PM and Home Minister the UP
government registered a case against them in Ram janam bhoomi police
station at Ayodhya. But instead of making it a contempt of court case or
any serious offence, the case has been registered as ‘stopping a
government employee from performing his duty’ whcih means the government
can withdraw the case once the dust is settled . On the other hand VHP
leaders have once again declared that they will break all those laws which
will come in the way of their religious freedom "
It was a rehearsal and a well thought-out plan; first it was Agra where
the activists of Bharatiya Yuva Janata Morcha desecrated the Taj Mahal and
hoisted the saffron flag and then in Ayodhya senior leaders of Vishwa
Hindu Parishad headed by its working President Ashok Singhal, former
director general of police SC Dixit,VHP leader Pravin Bhai Togadia and
many other activists stormed the Garbh Grah of Ram Mandir and remained
there for about forty minutes during which the police force posted there
to maintain law and order and the security of the site after initial
scuffle remained a mute spectator. All this happened in the presence of
chief minister Rajnath Singh and other senior leaders of the BJP who were
in Faizabad in connection with a public rally. Since it was the first day
of Navratri (first day of Dussehra or Vijai Dashmi that marks the victory
of Lord Rama over demon king Ravana) an auspicious occasion the day on
which Hindus start nine days of fasting. So this incident may not be
brushed aside as an ordinary incident and was definitely a well
thought-out plan that gave a message to the Hindus all over the country to
get ready for the final assault any time after 12 March 2002, the date
after which the VHP has announced to start the Ram temple construction at
Babri Masjid site in Ayodhya.
According to the information MG collected from its sources in Ayodhya and
Faizabad the central police force posted there tried to stop them from
moving towards the sanctum sanctorum crossing the limit set by court for
Darshan (glimpse) of Ram Lalla, they even had a scuffle with the CRPF
picket, but Singhal prevailed. They went to the Garbh Grah and took a vow
to construct the Ram Temple come what may.
It is for the first time after the fateful day of 6th December 1992 that
outsiders entered the area by by-passing the court order. As per the stay
order granted by the High Court only Pujaris could enter the said area for
Bhog of Ram Lalla and no other person is allowed .The whole area is under
the custodianship of the central government and the commissioner of
Faizabad acts as a receiver.
Ashok Singhal and other activists who occupied the sanctum sanctorum
remained there for about forty minutes during which they were continuously
reciting Raam Jaap, raising slogans and participated in Bhog and Aarti
programme of Ram lalla.
Divisional Commissioner Anil Kumar Gupta accompanied by Distt Magistrate
BP Misra, Dy. Inspector General Faizabad range RP Singh and SSP Prabhat
Kumar reached Ram mandir as soon as he got the information of this
development, but VHP activists who had also gathered there stopped their
cars and compelled these officers to move on foot to the sanctum
sanctorum. In the meantime, Ashok Singhal and his party left the spot.
However the divisional commissioner and Ashok Singhal entered into a
verbal duel. He even warned them that they will be arrested if they
persisted with their mischief for which Ashok Singhal immediately offered
his arrest which was however denied.
Later, talking to media persons Ashok Singhal termed this government as
andhi aur bahri (blind and deaf) which understands the language of
agitation only. He said that the incident of today was just a warning so
that the government realizes that Hindus can’t take the humiliation
lying down. "I really wanted to be arrested so that in the court I
could ask about my crime but the police did not give me the
opportunity," he said.
Shirish Chandra Dixit the former chief of state police said "I have
always found the security at the temple rather humiliating; Lord Rama has
been kept as a prisoner of war."
The state administration behaved in a very ridiculous manner on this very
sensitive issue. First it denied the incident, later underplayed and
finally declared that the incident did not take place so there is no need
of initiating any action against the guilty . Just imagine the
helplessness of the bureaucracy in UP, Principal Home Secretary is denying
about the occurrence of the incident, whereas the perpetrators of the
crime are crying from the roof top that "yes we have committed the
crime, initiate the action against us if you have the courage " and
the helpless administration is parroting the government line "when
there is no crime committed where is the question of initiating any action
against any body."
The opposition has demanded immediate arrest of all the culprits who
violated the supreme court order and barged into the Ram temple.
Secretary General of Samajvadi Party, the main opposition, Shivpal Singh
Yadav has demanded immediate arrest of all the culprits and requested the
Supreme Court to initiate action against them as they have violated the
courts order and thus committed the contempt of court. Mayavati the former
chief minister has sought action against the guilty and a foolproof
security arrangement at the disputed site so that the incident is not
repeated in future . She said that the action of BJP youth wing activists
in Agra and the one that took place in Ayodhya should not be seen in
isolation. Both are closely connected and point out the great conspiracy
the sangh parivar is hatching against our secular system.
The general opinion however is that it was a calculated move on the part
of the saffron brigade meant to polarize the voters on communal line which
is the only way out for the BJP to win the forthcoming assembly election.
Zafaryab Jilani the convener of Babri Masjid Action Committee has made a
written complaint with the Distt administration and requested to ensure
that the incident is not repeated and the status quo is maintained as per
the letter and spirit of the court order. q |
