Adam Medical Centre
Old Delhi area, also famous by the name
of Walled City, occupies the first place in Asia from the point of view of
huge crowds and density of population. An idea of its density can be had
from the fact that on an average, an individual spends his whole life
i.e., from birth till death on an area of two-and-a-half sq. metres. This
can be a surprise for the whole world but this is the ground reality here.
The density of population here is 400 persons per kilometre. In future
this shortage of space is expected to grow much further. It is estimated
that by 2025 the share of each individual, on an average, would be only
1.6 metres.
But considering the dense population, basic facilities are virtually
non-existent. Specially, medical facilities in the area are extremely
limited. The people of this area acutely felt this necessity when communal
riots broke out in the aftermath of Babri Masjid demolition and they had
to face great difficulties in getting medicines and providing timely
medical facilities to those who were injured in these riots and a
temporary medical centre was set up under the leadership of Shahi Imam
Abdullah Bukhari.
Setting up of Adam Medical Centre in the Pataudi House area on 5 November
95 by the Shahi Imam himself is being considered as an effort to meet this
shortage. According to its director, Dr Najam Jalali the absence of a good
institution in this area was being strongly felt. Adam Medical Centre is
trying to meet this shortage. According to him, it was only by full and
active cooperation of doctors and common people as well as prominent
people that this Centre had started functioning within ten days only after
the place was taken on rent.
As regards the facilities and other arrangements in the Centre, Dr Jalali
says that it is equipped with expert doctors and modern machines, 24-hours
emergency facilities, x’ray, ECG, Lab facilities together with
auto-analysis, operation theatre, private AC rooms, daily cardiac OPD,
ECO, US., Holter, Photo-therapy and consultancy facilities for all kinds
of diseases and ailments are provided.
According to the director, out of 15 beds in the Centre, three are
charitable i.e. meant for the poor. In addition to all this, this Centre
also continuously organises charity camps and free OPD facilities are also
provided on Fridays. The idea of prefixing ‘Adam’ with this Centre is
to project the feeling of human sympathy and service to people. q |
