Al-Haaj Hakeem Jamaluddin

Al-Haaj (Haji) Hakeem Jamaluddin is one of those few physicians who are successfully carrying on their practice in Unani system of treatment even today. Born at Kot, District Faridabad and educated at Faridabad and Muzaffar Nagar (UP), he received training at an allopath doctor's clinic for three years. Later on, when he opened his own clinic he opted for purely indigenous system of treatment.
In the beginning very few patients came to his clinic. His relatives and friends used to advise him not to go in for Unani system as his profession but he did not lose heart. Today the list of his patients not only includes those from Delhi but from outside Delhi as well. MGs Ahsan Siddiqui spoke to him recently.

Why did you choose the profession of Unani system as the means of livelihood?
I was interested in Unani system right from my childhood. In Kot there was a Hakeem near a jungle who used to diagnose diseases simply by feeling the pulse. I chanced to go to him many times along with my relatives in my childhood. It increased my interest and curiosity about Hakeems.

How do you foresee the future of Unani system?
The coming days will be better for Unani system of treatment. People's interest in this system is increasing. There are very successful treatments for many diseases in Unani system. When people are fed up after taking too much of allopathic medicines, they have per force to take recourse to Unani and Ayurvedic medicines.

Why then BUMS doctors run after Allopathy?
This is because of their easy-going nature. Unani system is laborious because medicines and herbs have to be ground and pulverised and doses have to be packed separately. Therefore they try to avoid this system. But nothing of this sort is required to be done in Allopathy.

These days every one wants quick results and immediate relief whereas Unani system is time-taking and slow. Under such circumstances, don't the patients complain?
They do not complain because when they get disappointed from other systems of treatment, they come here and get relief. It is very essential to patiently and carefully listen to the patient and also to console and assure him/her.

What kind of patients mostly come to you?
All types of patients; but Unani treatment is second to none for diseases like joint pains, rheumatism, stomach problems (constipation, gas etc), cold and cough, asthma, kidney problems etc. Only Unani and Ayurvedic systems offer treatments for present days' extremely harmful and even fatal disease, Hepatitis-B.

Are the results of both Unani and Ayurvedic systems similar?
Unani is world's oldest system of treatment and in many other respects, is superior to Ayurvedic system.
