Obituaries: 1-15 November 2002

Noted religious scholar MAULANA QARI SUALIMAN, rector Madrasa Tajweedul Qur’an, Azad Market Delhi died on October 18. He was ill for some time and was in ICU in Delhi’s Ganga Ram Hospital. Known for his Arabic phonetics (Tajweed), he was founder, rector and patron of several madrasahs specially in the backward region of Mewat. His several disciples are engaged in dawah work in India and abroad. His obsequies took place in Delhi. 

MIRZA ASHFAQ BAIG, general secretary of Indian National League Delhi, died of cardiac arrest on October 10. He was 55 and unmarried. He was popular for his cheerful disposition and managerial qualities.

Noted journalist and president of Tejpur Press Club MUHAMMAD ABDUL MANNAN died in a private nursing home on October 20. He was 70 and is survived by wife, four sons and four daughters.

Minister of state for revenue and a senior leader of National Conference, CHOWDHARY MOHAMMAD HUSSAIN passed away in Kashmir on September 30. He was 73 and had been suffering from lung cancer for last one year. He is survived by wife, three sons, three daughters and grand children. Born in Panjnara village in Rajouri district of Kashmir in 1929, Chowdhary was a five times legislator and a most senior member of National Conference Central Working Committee. A Punjab University alumnus, Chowdhary did his diploma in Rural Development from Lucknow. He joined Congress in 1967 and was elected MLA from Darhal the same year. He joined National Conference in 1977 and served as a minister in Sheikh Abdullah’s cabinet. His death has been widely condoled. In his condolence message, Dr Farooq Abdullah said that Chowdhary served the state in different capacities; as a minister and a political leader, and remained a vocal legislator who projected people’s problems vociferously. State minister for revenue Relief and Rehabilitation, Abdul Qayoom expressed deep sorrow over his demise and said that he was one of the leading political stalwarts of the state who always believed in value based politics and worked for the uplift of the under privileged section of the society. Condolence meetings were held at several places.
