Relief to be sent to Afghan refugees
A People’s Committee for the Relief
of Afghan Refugees has been formed in Delhi by some leading
socio-political and human rights activists. It was announced in a press
release issued by the committee on 19 November. The committee aims to send
essentials to Afghan refugees in camps set up to rehabilitate people of
the war ravaged country.
In a meeting organized on 19 November a number of leading social,
political and human rights activists assembled to form the Peoples
Committee for the Relief of Afghan Refugees that will be headed by
renowned Gandhian and former MP Nirmala Deshpande. The committee decided
to collect essential relief items like medicines, blankets, milk and other
essentials and send it to refugee camps at the earliest. The committee
believes that it will be a right move and will show Indian people’s
concern for their Afghan brothers who are in immediate need of relief.
Nirmala Deshpande who was selected as the president of the committee said
that the committee’s efforts would be to rush right relief material to
the most needy as early as possible, preferably by going to the camps
directly. She appealed to the people to donate generously to rush the
relief to the Afghan refugees in the North-West Frontier Province of
Pakistan before the auspicious occasion of Eid as it will be a gesture of
solidarity with the distressed people of Afghanistan from the people of
India. Navaid Hamid who has been selected as the organisation’s
secretary, said that the gesture is important because Indian people have
always maintained very cordial relationship with the people of Afghanistan
for a long time. The Afghans had also fully supported Indian freedom
struggle and the first Indian government-in-exile was formed in
Afghanistan. Hamid added that even Subhash Chandra Bose, the legendary
freedom fighter, first migrated to Afghanistan and formed his Indian
National Army.
The committee includes people from various walks of life like Prof. Amrik
Singh, Chturanan Mishra, MM Khan, Dr Rafiq Zakaria, Medha Patkar, Saiyid
Hamid, Syed Shahabuddin, Maulana Shafi Moonis, M Afzal, ND Pancholi and Dr
Zafarul-Islam Khan.
