The Mecca-based Rabita Aalam Al-Islami (World Muslim League) has elected
Maulana Rabey Hasani Nadwi, rector of Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama, Lucknow, as a founder-member. Sources in Delhi claimed that the Maulana’s nomination to the Rabita consultative committee was propped up by India as against Pakistan getting Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani into it. The Maulana has been given the responsibility of looking after India and Nepal, his spokesperson said.
Ihtishamur Rahim Khan has been elected president of AMU Old Boys Association Delhi. Ameer Alam has been re-elected for the post of general secretary. Arshad Jamal Zaidi and Rana Parveen have been elected as vice-presidents and Mansoor Khan and Tasnim Malik have been elected joint secretaries. Wasim Ahmad Khan won the post of treasurer.
Albeena Shakeel of the SFI-AISF combine was elected president of Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) with a formidable margin of 589 votes; thus becoming only the second woman president of JNUSU after Rashmi Doraiswamy, who had won the post in the 1984 elections. Although Albeena was the clear favourite from day one, the huge margin was a surprise to many. ‘It is a reassertion of the fact that the campus does not have any room for communal politics. The students have given a political mandate of a national level here. It is a mandate against the ABVP and its policies,’ the president-elect said soon after winning. In the JNUSU for the fifth consecutive year, Albeena was elected the vice-president last year.
Veteran actress, social activist and Rajya Sabha member Shabana Azmi will help Orissa State Police’s Human Rights Protection Cell (HRPC) to generate awareness against women-related crimes in the state, and, if things go right, she may hit the streets of Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack with rallies and street plays within two months. ‘Her street plays about communal harmony have been a huge success in UP and we want her help us here,’ said KM Lall, additional DG (HRPC). The heinous crimes related to women including rape, dowry torture and banishment form home after marriage by insensitive in-laws have been ever increasing. With its staggering crime rate against the fair sex, the state has been described as the most unsafe place for women in the country.
Member Parliament and chairman of UP Waqf Board, Amir Alam joined Smajwadi Party on 21 November. He had earlier announced his intention to leave the Lok Dal after its leader and now Agriculture Minister in the centre Ajit Singh joined hands with the BJP. This move was expected and was being awaited for quite some times. Earlier Amir Alam had launched Lok Dal (secular) which now has been merged in the Smajwadi Party. In a press conference also attended by Samajwadi party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, Ameer Alam announced his decision of joining the SP. He said that in the state there is no hope for secular forces except Mulayam Singh Yadav. ‘He is alone fighting the communal forces’ Alam added. Mulayam Singh Yadav who announced his induction in the party said that with his entry in the party it is expected that the party will get a boost in western UP. Amir Alam represents Kairana Parliamentary seat.
