Awards: 1-15 December 2001

The former Deputy Speaker of Kerala Assembly and veteran Congress leader Ms. Nafeesat Beevi has been selected for the Best Social Worker award, instituted by the Muslim Welfare Organisation, for the year 2001. The septuagenarian Nafeesat Beevi, a member of the State Women’s Commission, has embellished everything she touched and proved her mettle in the social and cultural fields of the State. She stepped into politics right from her college days, at a time when Muslim women hesitated to involve themselves in that field. Nafeesat Beevi shot into prominence when she defeated Communist veteran TV Thomas in his Alappuzha constituency, a known communist stronghold, in 1960 Assembly election. In the same year she was appointed as the Deputy Speaker of the House.
