The former Deputy Speaker of Kerala Assembly and veteran Congress leader
Ms. Nafeesat Beevi has been selected for the Best Social Worker award, instituted by the Muslim Welfare Organisation, for the year 2001. The septuagenarian Nafeesat Beevi, a member of the State Women’s Commission, has embellished everything she touched and proved her mettle in the social and cultural fields of the State. She stepped into politics right from her college days, at a time when Muslim women hesitated to involve themselves in that field. Nafeesat Beevi shot into prominence when she defeated Communist veteran TV Thomas in his Alappuzha constituency, a known communist stronghold, in 1960 Assembly election. In the same year she was appointed as the Deputy Speaker of the House.
The chief photographer of Kashmir Times Abdul Qayoom has been awarded a special prize in the First National Photo Contest organized by the National Highways Authority of India, Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, government of India. Qayoom is among the few photo-journalists who have been selected for the award and the first Kashmiri photographer who won a national award for his work. Qayoom received the award from the Union minister of state for surface transport Major Genearl BC Kandhuri in New Delhi.
Mueen Ahsan Jazbi, a senior and respected Urdu poet has been awarded Kaneez Hasnain Memorial Award by AMU City Association of New York. The award that carries a cash reward of Rs .1 million was presented to him by AMU vice chancellor Muhammad Hamid Ansari in a program organized in the AMU on 15 November.
In a well attended award distribution ceremony a senior critic and dean of Art faculty, AMU, Prof. Zaidi Jafar Raza showered accolades on Jazbi and said that what he has achieved in his lifetime has no precedence in the recent history. Prof Syed Waqr Husain said that Jazbi gives great importance to selection of words and his poetry represent true aspects of human lives. AMU Old Boys Association, North America was represented on this occasion by Prof. Asad Ahmad. He praised Jazbi for his achievements and his contribution to the Urdu poetry.
