HIJACKING EPISODE: ‘NATIONAL’ MEDIA’S MISPLACED PRIORITIES
During the early days of the Indian Airlines Airbus hijacking, the so-called ‘national’ media played a clear anti-national role by blowing up the hysterical reactions of the hostages’ relatives which placed undue pressure on the government to seek a settlement under unnecessary internal pressure besides encouraging and showing off the selfish and adhocist side of our personality. At the very same time this arrogant media slept on anti-hijack reactions of the Muslim community. An important statement was issued to the press by nine Muslim community leaders, including Saiyid Hamid, KM Khan (MP), Prof. Alauddin Ahmad, M Afazl, Maulana Fuzail Qasimi and Prof. Iqbal Ansari. This statement was carried by both the PTI and UNI but the ‘national’ press chose to ignore it. Three days later, when prime minister Vajpayee called some Muslim leaders to a meeting to seek their help in resolving the crisis, his attention was drawn to the statement spiked by the media. It was only after this that the media started taking interest in Muslim statements denouncing the hijacking incident. An atmosphere was being prepared by some vested interests to show that somehow the ‘Muslim’ community itself had a hand in the cowardly incident!
