Ali Miyan no more
|Maulana Abul Hasan Ali Hasani Nadwi, popularly known as ‘Ali Miyan,’ breathed his last on Friday, 31 December at the ripe age of 86. A great, scholar, preacher, reformer and writer of Arabic and Urdu, Ali Miyan was associated all his life with Nadwatul Ulama. Since 1961 he was also its rector, nazim.
Ali Miyan was the most prominent spiritual leader of the Indian Muslim community during the last four decades. He had considerable influence in the World of Islam. In fact, he was the most well-known face of the Indian Muslim community abroad. Ali Miyan was highly acclaimed internationally and won many awards including the King Faisal Award for services to Islam in 1979.
Muslims all over India and abroad were grieved at his demise. All major Islamic organizations issued statements eulogizing his services and considering his death as a great loss to the community and the World of Islam, a loss which would not be easily filled. Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Congress president Sonia Gandhi also expressed their grief. Former prime minister VP Singh considered his death as a personal loss. Ali
