AMU AND HAMDARD IN CRISIS
|The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and the Jamia Hamdard have been closed down. Police force has been deployed at both the universities in the wake of the prevailing tension at the campuses following the stabbing of deputy proctor at AMU and the murder of a student at Hamdard.
The AMU was closed down from 9 December to 10 January after the deputy proctor of the university, Qayyum Husain, was stabbed at his residence on 3 December by some masked miscreants. Husain was walking in his rear lawn when he heard the guard shouting that some masked persons were entering the compound. Husain picked up a stick and rushed to rescue his school-going children. He confronted about 15 masked intruders armed with revolvers, iron rods and knives.
According to Husain, three of the intruders were definitely criminals. He could figure that out by their accent and the way they spoke and the fact that they needed one of the accompanying students’ guidance to know who was their victim.
According to Husain, he hit one of the assailants, who was carrying a weapon, forcing him to drop it. He then hit another assailant who picked it up. He caught hold of a boy from behind in a bear-hug and bit into his shoulder. He was not going to let him go, which is why one of the group stabbed him in the shoulder. Another assailant hit him on the head with a revolver butt or an iron rod, and slashed his neck and elbow.
It is reported that one of the factors behind the current crisis on the AMU campus is that the university has introduced the ‘term system’ in the campus curricula. According to this system, examinations would be held twice a year and the syllabus was also divided into two parts.
The genesis of the current problem on the AMU campus is said to be the newly-introduced ‘semester-system’ which was not acceptable to some students while others were in its favour and submitted a memorandum in this respect on 2 December. This agitated the miscreants who started targeting teachers and gutted the offices of the provost and dean of students welfare (DSW) by throwing petrol bombs.
For the stabbing of Husain, the university administration has named the following persons: Naseem Ahmad, Kuber Dutt Tyagi, Hammad Ahmad, Sarwar Iqbal, Javed Ahmad and Shahid Malik . They have been arrested by the police under sections 147, 148, 307, 436, 504 and 506 of the IPC.
In the Jamia Hamdard, the months-old crisis boiled over when a student of BUMS second year, Muhammad Salman, 22, of Azamgarh district in UP, was murdered. His body was found hanging from a tree in the campus.
In the grip of grief, students of the university came out from hostels raising slogans against the proctor, smashed his vehicle and threw stones at his residence. In view of the mood of agitated students, the university administration reportedly sent the proctor on forced leave.
It is considered that malignant elements in these institutions are merely a minuscule minority. Despite this the administration is unable to control these unruly elements. The authorities wake up only when miscreants succeed in disturbing the peaceful environment of these institution.
