PUCL to probe VHP charge of Meos' ISI links
|Expressing concern at Vishwa Hindu Parishad's campaign and media reports alleging spread of ISI network among the Meo population in the Mewat area, the Rajasthan unit of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has decided to send a team to study the situation and come up with a factual report.
PUCL activists and some members of Meo panchayat said that the VHP's campaign was aimed at maligning the entire Meo community. A fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, Shail Mayaram, observed that the atmosphere was reminiscent of Partition when there was a virtual genocide of Meos.
President of Rajasthan PUCL Prem Krishna Sharma said that the reports singling out Meos for criminal and anti-national activities were grossly exaggerated and presented a distorted picture. The PUCL decided to approach the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to hold a public hearing in Mewat over reports of cow smuggling, cow slaughter and spying.
The VHP had accused state cabinet minister Chaudhary Tayyab Hussain - community head of all 36 Meo clans - of shielding and giving support to ISI agents and cow smugglers.
In a memorandum to Gehlot, the VHP had also alleged harassment of Hindus in Mewat and a spurt in ISI activities in the region and he had ordered an inquiry. These self-imposed chaudharies of patriotism have raised certain baseless alarms about Muslims in various areas like areas bordering Nepal, Kishanganj as well as areas bordering Pakistan in Rajasthan and Bangladesh in West Bengal. q
