Corruption charges levelled against Dhubri MP
By M H Rahman
|Each member of parliament receives Rs twenty million every year under the MPs' local area development fund from the Central Government. The fund is utilized for the development of the constituency of the respective MP. The schemes are prepared and implemented by the district collector in accordance with the directions of the concerned MP.
Dhubri is one of the most backward Lok Sabha constituencies in the country. Over 50 percent of the population of this constituency belongs to the Muslim minority. They elected Mr. Abdul Hamid to Lok Sabha in the last general elections. Mr. Hamid has been elected to Parliament for several terms from this constituency. Nobody ever brought any corruption charges against him till the last Lok Sabha elections. This time the state legislator, Mr. Ali Akbar Mian, has levelled serious corruption charges against Abdul Hamid. Mian is alleging that under the MP's local area development fund, a number of schemes like the construction of a road and boundary-wall of a graveyard, flood control, distribution of tube-well and spray machines to the farmers, were taken up for implementation in different parts of Dhubri district during 1997-2000, but after doing only 10-15 percent of the work of each scheme, funds allotted for each scheme were siphoned off. According to Mian, a total of Rs. 15,155,000 was drained out of the MP's local development fund during 1997- 2000.
Since both MP Hamid and the Dhubri deputy commissioner are maintaining silence over the corruption charges, it is widely believed that there is a nexus between the two. The allegations made by Mian are of serious nature. They must be investigated by an independent agency in order to find out the truth.q
